De flamboyante 'post-punk neo-glam rockmusical' Hedwig and the Angry Inch werd in het buitenland met prijzen overladen (oa Sundance, Deauville, Stockholm, Berlijn) maar kreeg in Nederland weinig handen op elkaar. Verrassend, want bijna alles aan deze film van John Cameron Mitchell klopt. Titelheldin Hedwig is een Oost-Duitse transseksueel die zich laat opereren om naar de VS te kunnen als bruid van een Amerikaanse militair. Hoewel de operatie verschrikkelijk mis gaat (er blijft een 'angry inch' achter), bereikt Hedwig het beloofde land. Daar eindigt ze als rockmuzikante, die met begeleidingsband The Angry Inch belangrijke episoden uit haar leven bezingt.
