Heated Discussion: Strategies for Communicating Climate Change in a Polarized Era

The 2018 report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that Earth’s temperatures may soon reach a tipping point that threatens humanity’s future. Scientists from many disciplines agree that anthropogenic climate change is a serious problem yet many Americans remain skeptical of the existence, causes, and/or severity of climate change. In this article, we review recent research on climate change communication focusing on audience variables and messaging strategies with the goal of providing communication practitioners research-based recommendations for climate change message design. Factors that influence audience acceptance and understanding of climate science include: demographic variables (such as political party affiliation, religious orientation, and geographic location), as well as brief sections on misinformation, and beliefs in pseudoscience. Keys to effectively construct climate messaging are discussed including: framing strategies; reducing psychological distance; emotional appeals; efficacy cues; weight-of-evidence/weight of expert reporting; inoculation/correcting misinformation; and separating science from conspiracy theories. Evidence-based strategies are critical in giving science communicators the tools they need to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the at-risk public.

- Martin Delahunty As we approach the January 2026 deadline for implementing the 2022 White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's public access directives, it's critical to assess the practical implications of these changes on research publishing. In this excellent PNAS article (https://lnkd.in/e2kvdkeV), the authors give some key recommendations from a recent study:🔍 Develop a Research Agenda: Investigate how policy changes affect research communication and publishing to ensure they strengthen the research enterprise.📖 Examine Open-Access Models: Analyze the impact of Green and Gold OA models on researchers, universities, and the quality of research.🏢 Monitor Industry Consolidation: Study how industry consolidation affects publication quantity and quality, and the survival of independent publishers.🧐 Reform Peer Review: Assess the quality of peer review and explore incentives for scholars to participate in the process.🏫 Support Universities: Help universities adapt their financial models to manage OA costs effectively.🔗 Ensure Data Access: Address the challenges of data storage, management, and sharing to promote long-term access and integrity. The authors stress that an evidence-based approach is essential to navigate the evolving landscape of open research and ensure the credibility and accessibility of scientific publications.#OpenAccess #ResearchPolicy #ScientificPublishing #OSTP #Science #AcademicResearch 16

- Lauren Goodley I'm conducting a webinar next week on Digital Preservation - Foundations and Theory. Good stuff! It's being offered through ALA/ACRL, Wed. July 24 from 1-2pm CST. I'd love to see you there! Many institutions have digital preservation programs in place. How did they get there? What principles of library work apply to digital preservation, and what foundational texts and standards apply specifically to the digital preservation world? Rather than focusing on technology, tools, and platforms, this webinar emphasizes the organizational and foundational understanding needed to choose and utilize technology efficiently for the best preservation outcomes. The webinar will provide a strong basis for librarians beginning digital preservation tasks, those engaged in these tasks who want to review their program and refresh their understanding, and managers and colleagues who may not be involved in this work but need to understand the work as it pertains to them.Learning OutcomesGain knowledge and understanding of digital preservation theory.Practice and experience translating theory into a digital preservation program.Gain a strong understanding of high level concepts to build upon in future learning. 25 2 Comments

- Evan Dalrymple Please donate to the Internet Archive, in their pursuit to make digital access of books available to the world. It is a blow to my work as a Reference Librarian. I often give users a digital lending option via Internet Archive. IA is appealing because users being able to digitally borrow falls uner Fair Use In American copyright law. I fail to see how it’s having an impact on big publishers bottom line. If anything it’s using older books no longer used or sold by them. It’s creating opportunities for publishers if anything, by encouraging a readership. Big publishers are losing the PR game through removing all of the books from IA. 2
- Shanitha Ramharak Alexis Grewan and Professional Editors' Guild (PEG) Thank you for a great article.I can learn from all the rules, but the ones that stick out are:1. Know the rules of professional conduct. I am realizing now with my current client, that our actions have consequences. Your guidance on being 'competent, responsible and reputable', resonate with me. We need to ensure that our feedback lands softly. In whatever we do, we must build the client and ourselves.2. Know the rules of grammar and punctuation. It is so empowering when you can explain to a client the reason informing a change. Thanks again Alexis for an awesome post. 2

- Auston Stamm This literature review explores the history of libraries, current laws, and studies. It examines digital accessibility and physical accessibility issues impacting libraries. A major issue is library webpages and PDFs having accessibility errors. This article overlooks third-party library databases. I hope that more academic journals and databases offer their published works as accessible HTML pages. This can make library resources accessible to all. #accessibility https://lnkd.in/gBfDrpbi 4
- Heather Pouliot K. But what do you do for a living, Heather? It's complicated (and super cool). The best, big-picture term is: I'm a cultural heritageprofessional. It is the SAA (Society of American Archivists) word of the week, and it's listed as a "new term," but it missed the inclusion of genealogists. Here's what I just suggested as an update:"Professional genealogy is a valid cultural heritage research field governed by standard practices and ethics. Not only are genealogists arguably the largest segment of researchers using archive and special collection repositories, but they also produce critical information through the analysis and interpretation of that material." - mehttps://lnkd.in/ekTNAaAd 6
- Meg McMahon, MSIS I wrote a blog post for the User Research Center at Harvard on non-Latin script searches in an English-language library search. This was a research study I did last fall. A huge shout out to our fall intern Katie Kim for helping with the project. It's crucial for libraries with a search system primarily based in Latin script to consider how our systems display and handle non-Latin script and how this affects how researchers find relevant results. One of the biggest takeaways for me is that some language resists Romanization due to dialects, colloquial pronunciation, or tonal pronunciation, and there is no worldwide standard for Romanization, which can lead to frustrating search experiences. Thankfully, having language experts in libraries can help mitigate this frustration, but we should consider how our search systems can help or hinder multilingual search behaviors. 13
- Matthew Coslett Science writers need to have a writing toolkit. Science writers should prepare a toolkit. Much like a carpenter is better with as many different tools as possible, we writers need them too. Some of the tools I've found useful in my toolkit:1. In media res (this one is my favorite tool but only for special occasions)2. Iceberg theory (show, don't tell and trust your reader)3. Metaphor and simile (if you can't describe something in science, describe something similar but relatable to the audience)You never know when you might get to play with your shiny new tools!!!Which tools have you found essential in your toolkit?#sciencewriting #medicalwriting #writing #scicomms #sciencecommunication #pressrelease 4
