I’ve been here twice in 2013 and 2015, and I only went back the second time because I knew it wouldn’t be Jackie doing my hair. Jackie is a really rude person. If you go, watch how she treats other stylists. I hope there is such as thing as karma because some of the sweetest people I’ve met she treats like they’re less than dirt under her shoe. I am on a chemotherapeutic for a condition and the first time I was there in August 2013 Jackie started loudly proclaiming that she knew what should be done for me (as if she’s a doctor) so I didn’t shed so much hair. It was really embarrassing. She also does not care about negative reviews, or if she upsets someone. Her attitude is that if you don’t like her, she doesn’t want or need you. If you like her and want to come back, great but she won’t treat you special. She is not a nice person. Do everyone a favor, avoid her.

Jackie and Kris are fantastic. I have very curly (Irish) ringlets, and Jackie really knows how to treat a curly girl right. The vibe of this salon is both happy and calming… Jackie is chatty in a perfect way. I was relaxed and my hair looked amazing by the time I left. Yes, it’s a little pricy (but in line with similar salons), but the care and love that Jackie put into my hair made my visit very worth it.
Jackie’s my new BFF hairstylist. Can’t wait to go back. And the Kevin Murphy products she has are an absolute marvel. Love them.
If you are a curly girl, head to Jackie. She’ll do you right.

I went in with a newer stylist to the salon, Kris. She did not make me feel good about myself. The first five minutes of our conversation I thought she was trying to talk me out of getting a hair cut at all. I think my requested cut was boring to her. Speaking of the cut I just want some long layers (and yes that is the cut I normally get, sorry to be boring) and I have never had a hair stylist mess it up like she did. She made the layers different by four inches! My hair is naturally wavy, and now it looks like I have a long mullet-style or something. the top sections of my hair sit on top and poof out. It looks awful. She even asked me if I tend to straighten my hair. I said not really, and she gave me this look like I was the ugliest person. I hated this experience. The only time she perked up was when she thought she could get recommendations through me, which I will not be doing. I get my hair cut about twice a year, and I have never had a hair style as bad as this. Even when I experimented with a pixie cut, I just didn’t like it short, the cut itself was good. I’m never going anywhere near this store again.

I’ve gotten only cuts here, no color, so can only comment on that part of the service. Each time I get my hair cut, it’s top-notch, and a great experience. Jackie is very skilled, listens carefully to what her customers want, and while it’s not inexpensive (the «curly cut» — her specialty — is $ 85), I go in trusting that I will always come out looking much better. If you’ve got hair that isn’t «regular» — either too frizzy, or too thick, or too thin, or too flat, or just not looking the way you’d like, Jackie is def. the person to see.
She also sells wonderful hair products that I haven’t seen at other salons — organic, sulfate-free, alcohol-free, paraben-free.

It’s taken me a long time to write this review because I really hate giving low ratings, especially to small businesses. But I feel like, especially for such an expensive cut, other curly girls needs to know! I literally cried the whole way home after leaving J’Earleys. As my curly hair was being ripped through by her thin toothed comb, it took everything in me to not just walk right out of the salon. She does not know how to cut curly hair… AT ALL! I kept telling myself, maybe she knows what she’s doing and it will turn out great (despite everything I know about curly hair)… but, it didn’t. When I left, my hair was a big poofy mess. My hair is so curly, it should be cut dry and in pieces, not wet with a comb. I can’t believe she had the audacity to charge me. A week later I had it fixed at Dellaria for a third of the price.

This was a great hair cut and experience. I normally hate getting cuts because I’m never happy with the result or the experience of going to a salon.
I made an appt the same day (morning) and I specifically asked for Jackie. I was the only person in the salon until right near the end when the next two clients came. There are only two chairs in the salon, so there can’t be too many there at once, and it was a spacious and minimal design that was very relaxing. Jackie took time to look at my hair before it was washed and ask what I wanted done. The person who washed my hair and set me up was friendly and talkative, I got several great book ideas to read from him. I asked for a curly cut and a few chunky highlights that weren’t gold. Jackie talked to me a lot during the cut, she’s quite friendly. It was nice to relax and not be so on-guard during the appt.
My highlights were a lovely color, very non-gold and flattering. At other salons I’ve had people bring out highlighting hair samples and match against mine etc, but she didn’t. She could tell from looking! For the cut, she used the scissors to thin out the hair on separated strands at different lengths, i.e. took a chunk about the size of two fingers round, pulled it out to see the curl, and ran the scissors against it following the wave or curl. This took a long time and it why the curly cut is more expensive than the regular cut. I suggest telling her when your hair is curliest (i.e. if it’s more curly when it’s dry, ask to get it cut dry instead, I may try that next time). She didn’t cut side layers, but did cut one layer in the back so that the top layer was shorter than the bottom and gave it some lift.
My hair is more curly than frizzy now, although for me the jury is still out about scissor-cutting down the strand. I know it’s a very popular and workable way to make curly hair more curly and bouncy, but I do notice more fly-aways. That said, it is overall far more manageable than it previously was and I’ve been wearing it down and curly ever since (instead of cramming into a bun and trying to forget it’s there).
The final cost was $ 120 for the cut and ¼ highlights. This is spendy, for sure, and isn’t what I choose to spend my money on every 6 weeks so it will sadly be a while until I can get back — but the money spent was worth it and I’ve been paid back in compliments and feeling lucky to find a place and stylist that could make my hair «work» again. Boston has inflated prices all around, and the price charged here is not overly expensive compared to other salons — but I found the experience, the service, the cut and the long-term results to be far superior.

I went here for the first time in the fall last year. I had a living social coupon to use. The salon was in a great location (not as good as St. Mary’s), but I could deal. It was well decorated and I got into my appointment on time.
The haircut was the best I have had in Boston hands down. Better than many Newbury street cuts or places making the top 10 city search. My color was also stunning and lasted until my next coloring.
Now you may be wondering why it did not give 55 stars. To begin with Jackie was very nice during the cut in general. I personally did not have any issues with her. She did become aggressive with someone on the phone while my color was setting. They also had a coupon deal, but the time was limited on getting in before it expired. It is understandable not to extend the date on a package, but to be very angry with a potential client is less good in my book. She then proceeded to complain about other costumers getting lost on their way to the salon or arriving late. I am sorry, but hearing angry things about other clients only makes me think of what you tell others about me.
The real icing on the cake came with my shampoo. I know they just moved and are working out some of the kinks, but the shampoo girl could not get the water to be hot let alone warm. She said the tank must of run out of water. She was very gentle and good, but having cold water poured on your head to wash out color is not anything I suggest to anyone. I did not speak up and I should have said something to Jackie (the shampoo girl didn’t mention it to her), but I figured I was already there on a coupon.
Long story short — I hope they get the water situation fixed. I could see this place being great for long term clients and returners. The hair cut was truly awesome.

I didn’t realize what a good cut looked like on my big big curly hair until I visited Jackie. My haircut is a little expensive, but my hair can go much longer between cuts because the shape grows out so well. I even went 5 months between cuts once because I was too scared to trust anybody else with my hair, and so I put it off until I could manage to make it back to Boston again.

I have a mixed review here. Nice salon. Residential location is OK, but Coolidge corner was easier. Jackie was nice and very honest about my color and cut. Talented stylist, but I did not feel welcome at all.
I had a coupon that I purchased at the beginning of the summer after I checked out her salon on Unilocal. They moved and were so busy it took me all this time to actually use it. Problem was I think she forgot that doing those coupons has a purpose: to treat the person at full price so they will come back! instead she gave the minimal «coupon» service and was happy that I was I was on– time (the other «coupon» folks were always late!)
Full service highlights and cut were 160. I paid 80 to be introduced to the salon and her services and got $ 60 back-nothing more nothing less. No water, no coffee, no tips for my hair, and surprisingly no mention or recommendations for when I come back. When we were done, she was done.” See ya later and if you come back great” attitude. I think that was the final burn. I followed you up to the boondocks, coupon or not, and you really don’t want me back again.
Done Deal Jackie. Good luck.

I found out about the salon on Unilocal which says it is located in Brookline Villaget. I walked out my door and started heading down Washington St towards Brookline Village.
Then I remembered the address listed said Beacon Street. I turned to head up Washington Street and called to get the address (the address on Unilocal is wrong).
When I got to the address I could not find the salon and called again to find out where exactly they were located. The owner got extremely rude saying I was asking her to stay late for me and I explained that the info on Unilocal was incorrect. Then she hung up on me. I will tell everyone I know not to go here.

I am a person, like many of my curly-haired cohorts, with a history of haircut trauma. Not at J Earleys’. My hair looks and feels fantastic.
I have found that Boston is not terribly familiar with the concept of «glamour,» or at the very least, just not accustomed to it. After years of unwanted «corporate cuts» I have finally found a woman who cuts hair the way I want it cut.
I believe the words that escaped my lips when I rose from the styling chair were «I think this is the best haircut I’ve EVER had.»
And that really says it all.
Thank you!

My goodness, where to begin? I guess I should start with all the head-turnin’ I caused this morning as I sashayed to work with my fabulous new haircut. I haven’t attracted this much attention since I was a nubile 20-year-old.
Jackie is the «J» in J. Early’s Hair Salon and except for her protégé Jonathan it’s just her. She is warm, welcoming, chatty and knows how the hell to cut curly hair. After years – years! – of mediocre haircuts it was a blessed relief to sit in the chair of someone who 1.) actually knows how to cut curly hair and 2.) is extremely personable and easygoing. Sometimes I get #2, rarely I get #1, but I haven’t had both since I was in college.
Jackie gave my current cut a critique of sorts, saying it made me a little dowdy (sad face) and diagnosed the weird curl pattern on the back of my head that always goes flat and makes the sides look mega-bushy. Finally!!! Someone actually considering how my hair works and what would most enhance my face. It’s about $ 20 more than a Newbury Street salon cut for her special «curly cut,» ($ 85 total) but it’s entirely worth it if you’re walking out with something done specifically for you, not a cut and paste job from the Manual of Generic Haircuts.
Her salon has three comfortable chairs for waiting and complimentary water. The shampoo chair is surprisingly comfortable and although a small space it’s very easy to feel relaxed in there. I was a little early for my appointment and my confidence was bolstered as I eavesdropped on her conversation with the gentleman in the chair getting his haircut. They were having a lively dialogue and I appreciated that when it was your time, she would be directing all her attention to you… which is exactly what happened when it was my appointment.
Jackie is the rare stylist who really knows what she’s doing and can transform your hair into the best it can be. It’s like getting a makeover. Go to this woman and trust her to know what’s best!

Jackie is delightful and listens better than any other hairdresser I have ever been too. Loved my cut so much that I even recommended teenagers with wavy/curly hair to see her. They also are thrilled.
I am so relieved to finally find a person I can totally trust with my fine, curly hair. Easy parking, clean facilities and she sells a quality product.

I walked into J Earley’s today without an appointment and she was able to cut my bangs on the spot. Our whole interaction lasted less than 20 minutes, but I will definitely return to this salon because my bangs look fantastic. Jackie gave me a short, choppy look that really compliments my face. I really appreciate a stylist who can visualize the right kind of bangs — so many stylists are reluctant to go too short for fear of upsetting the client! This was a great experience and I would definitely recommend her and return!

I went to this salon after reading all of the stellar reviews on Unilocal, but was extremely disappointed with my haircut and color. I wanted to like it as the owner, Jackie, is kind and welcoming but my haircut and color were so terrible I had to get my hair redone that same week.
First off, she gave my hair a curly cut even though my hair can’t hold a curl with a curling iron. A curly cut is basically an extremely expensive haircut where Jackie cuts your hair different lengths, but not like layers. As a result of this technique if you do not curl your hair it looks like you’ve had a really bad haircut (think many different lengths all over your head).
I also got partial highlights done. I have very dark hair and I asked for subtle highlights, nothing dramatic; just enough to prevent my roots from showing. Well she gave me bright blonde highlights which looked ridiculous in my hair.
All in all, Jackie did such a bad job that my mom, sisters, boyfriend, boss and roommate all made comments about it. I honestly would not write a bad review unless I was very disappointed, and I was after my experience here. She is a nice person but cannot cut hair. Perhaps her «curly cut» works well on some people but I seriously doubt it and whatever you do, do not get color done by her. Very expensive and bad.
When I was there she was talking to her assistant about Unilocal and the reviews in front of me. If I understood what they were saying correctly basically they said that they recommend people they know are happy with their hair to come here and write a review, even providing them with a card with the URL. So I’d be very skeptical of all the reviews here.

Jackie rocks, flat out– whether you have straight or curly hair (mine is in-between). I have TONS of hair, and have had hairdressers complain to me before– even had one hairdresser in Porter Square tell me to go home and wash and blow it out BEFORE he’d cut it… Jackie has never complained once– always a good start ;) She is very skillful, a very attentive listener and also intuitive in bringing out what you’d like even if you’re not quite so sure…
Worth every dollar. What are you waiting for!!! Make an appointment– esp. if you have curly hair. If you get there early, go to St. Mary’s nails in the basement… also a great place!

I have coarse hair that has a weird wave. It won’t do true curls or go straight all on it’s own. Jackie can transform my waves into the nicest ringlets using a blow-dryer and just her fingers. This is so cool for me, especially in the warm weather. Because even if I do pick up a little frizz it is not noticeable. Her styling lasts me a couple of days so that I don’t have to shampoo — I just spritz with gel and scrunch with a diffuser. She is also the only stylist who has ever taken a razor to my hair with out making it all fly away.

So I don’t have curly hair, I have pin straight hair. Jackie does a great job with it, I’ve been going here for 3 or 4 years and she never gives me a bad haircut. My hair is very thick and its manageable the way she layers and razors it, without looking choppy. Plus she highlights it and it always looks natural and I get tons of compliments.
She also did my hair for my wedding and I was very pleased. Plus, she styled all the mothers and grandmothers and everyone looked beautiful.
I recommend Jackie for any hair type, not just curly.

J Earley’s is hands down the best place I have ever gotten my curly hair cut. Great story of Jackie Earley starting up her own salon (near BU), trained in the Curlisto style (originally worked in Carriage House Salon — in Harvard Square).
$ 85 for the curly hair cut, but I definitely recommend the splurge. She might be a little liberal with hair gel, but after a wash you’ll be a happy camper.
